Congenital heart disease in children of mothers with Type 2 diabetes

This new systematic review based on almost 24 000 children of women with Type 2 diabetes estimates that the risk is comparable to that of offspring of women with Type 1 diabetes and almost four times higher than in the background population.

Whereas the risk of congenital heart defects in the offspring of women with Type 1 diabetes is well described little is known about the risk in children of mothers with Type 2 diabetes. This new systematic review based on almost 24 000 children of women with Type 2 diabetes estimates that the risk is comparable to that of offspring of women with Type 1 diabetes and almost four times higher than in the background population.
