Intra-articular injection of adipose tissue for knee osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis leads to disability in a substantial proportion of elderly people. In this pilot study, twenty patients with knee osteoarthritis were treated with a single intra-articular injection of autologous, microfragmented adipose tissue. The authors observed reduced pain and symptoms and improved function in many of the patients during the following year. They conclude that the procedure is safe and call for randomized controlled trials to elucidate the efficacy of this novel treatment.
