Hospitals should apply qualitative methods for improvement of the patient-experienced quality
In Region of Southern Denmark a method was developed, which showed that when qualitative methods are used to reveal patients’ experiences while being admitted to hospital extra value can be added to improve procedures. The methodical design was based upon appreciative inquiry and consisted of observational studies, solo interviews with patients and the use of ‘personas’ in the final workshop (health personnel and patients) to facilitate shared reflections on possible improvements. The process led to better ownership and specific, realistic suggestions for improvements, i.e. better information etc.
