Antipsychotic medication and psychotherapy in treatment of schizophrenia in adults
Antipsychotic medication plays a central role in reducing the positive symptoms associated with schizophrenia, but treatment effects need to be balanced with a range of potential medication adverse events. Psychotherapy can help alleviate residual symptoms and promote well-being. Family interventions and cognitive behaviour therapy are currently the only evidence-based psychotherapies for schizophrenia. There is a need to continue to develop a range of evidence-based psychotherapy treatments in order to improve outcomes in schizophrenia.
