Women screened for gestational diabetes mellitus have a high long-term risk of developing diabetes despite normal oral glucose tolerance test during pregnancy

It is recommended to screen pregnant women with high risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) (e.g high BMI, family history of diabetes or previous macrosomia) for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). In the december issue of Danish Medical Journal, Dubietyte et al report results of a 28-years follow up study of 347 women screened for GDM but with normal or borderline OGTT. The authors find that the incidence of DM is increased app. three times in this group and discuss possibilities of implementation of interventions to postpone development of manifest DM.
