Complications and survival after colorectal cancer surgery associate with BMI

Evidence is conflicting regarding the association between weight class, measured by BMI, and post-operative complications and survival in patients with colorectal cancer.

New study based on 14,004 patients extracted from the Danish Colon Cancer Group database reports that the risk of post-operative complications rises with increasing weight, whereas postoperative morbidity is increased only in the underweight and morbidly obese patients. The authors conclude that the focus on the underweight and obese patients both pre- and postoperatively should be increased.
